Competing Apart or Together ? Gender, Performance and Participation, avec Kerian de Marcellius

Abstract : 
How does competition design shape women's careers ? Many organizations allocate ranks, prizes, and advancement through tournament-like rules. Changing these rules can alter incentives to participate and exert effort. We exploit staggered regional reforms in French youth chess that removed girls-only qualifiers, leaving mixed-gender tournaments as the sole route to the female national championship. Difference-in-differences estimates show unchanged participation, lower female performance in mixed regional qualifiers, but girls who qualify through mixed tournaments perform better at the female national championship. We develop a dynamic structural model of participation, effort, performance, skill accumulation, and quitting to simulate alternative competition designs. The model traces the trade-off between tougher competition, short-run performance, and retention.
